This exhibit highlights a collection of portraits by Zoe Bray, depicting individuals with ties to Nevada's Basque heritage. Painted from life, these works delve into the many ways Basque identity can be shaped and expressed.

Zoe Bray, a European artist, illustrator, and writer, reflects on her own connection to Nevada’s Basque legacy.

Upon moving to this side of the world, she discovered that, over a century ago, her great-grandfather had emigrated under vastly different circumstances to work as a sheepherder in Nevada.

Unlike Zoe, who has made Reno her home after living in places like Israel and Palestine, her great-grandfather returned to the Basque Country (minus an eye, the result of an accident involving a horse).

Through her portrait work, Zoe has enjoyed forming connections with fellow Nevadans and is an active member of the Alliance Française de Reno.

She recently published her first children’s book, What Amatxi Whispered, a tale about a child of immigrants navigating multiple cultures and places. Zoe is currently working on more stories and illustrations, drawing inspiration from Nevada, the Basque Country, and beyond.
